Easter Is Here, a Hoppin' Good Time For all

It’s no longer cold or the time for snow; all those places and colors of yellow and orange appear again. Easter flowers have begun to show their lovely blooms–daffodils in your garden, pink blossoms spreading across the sky–spring is here! The bunny, family: what are you to do now? Splatter paint on an egg with your child in the living room; bake a cake in the kitchen, in the shape of a sheep? What are you going to say as you look into your children’s eyes as the sun comes up? What new blessing can you offer them before they go to sleep? What can you learn from your grandparents as you count another wrinkle? And your spouse–can you keep a longer smile, surrender in a new way? How are you meant to be with family, friends on this holiday, and in this new season?

Celebrate.

Easter, the day of resurrection and rejoicing. A time of reflection and contemplation, a holy day that marks the victory of Jesus Christ over death. As families and friends come together to celebrate, they share costumes and stories in an effort to keep the spiritual values alive in their children’s minds. Even if you don’t have your own family, it’s a place of fellowship among dear friends. Easter is truly a special occasion, uniting people of all cultures around the world in shared faith and joy.

Reflect.

Gatherings can be a time of joy and retrospective. We get to look back on our accomplishments, decisions, and activities. We can even go further into the past. Our ancestors saw a connection between the female reproductive cycle and the lunar cycle. The hare was known as a symbol of the moon in ancient Asian cultures, so it came to mean rebirth, or life after death. Celts and other early Europeans celebrated the Eostre festival honoring a goddess associated with springtime; her symbol was a rabbit, which was seen as among the most fertile animals, representative of new beginnings. This made its way to the Middle Ages where it was coupled with chickens’ eggs–both being symbols of fertility and rebirth come spring. It is thought that the Easter Bunny delivering candy and eggs started around 1600s Germany when edible bunnies began to be served.

Pray.

During this solemn tradition, we can offer up prayers of thanks to God for the gift of life and salvation he has offered us. If you are not religious, this could be an opportunity to recite mantras, express your gratitude out loud or in private, or find comfort in the silence of solitude. Listen closely—can you hear the serenity? Can you taste the stillness that holds reverence and respect?

Participate.

A hallowed space is formed around you. Your friends and neighbors congregate here in grace and harmony. The sun casts long, slender shadows across the floorboards as hands are joined in unison. Tranquil birdsong echoes from afar. You feel peace, contentment and love. Understandingly, you know this is where you were meant to be–whether it be in your living room or out in the thinness of the meadow with the grass tickling your ankles–you are home. You are alive. You are with your family.
